Description

Lotte Scott: Somerset Willow 1 is a unique photo, hand-printed on fibre-based paper and mounted on Somerset Willow. Lotte made several of these images specially for GroundWork Gallery’s Fragile Nature exhibition. They are substantial enough to stand up as small relief objects, or you can fix them to the wall. As wall-pieces they have a satisfying depth and presence.

The artist says:

My artwork explores place, time and material. Since 2013 my practice has focused on the peat moors of Somerset, examining the indexical nature of peat as a living archive of land and people. I work with a number of media, including photography, sculpture and drawing. Processes of transformation in the waterlogged landscape of the moors are of great interest to me. This is a place that distills and suspends ancient matter. It is where centuries of destructive peat cutting have unearthed a wealth of prehistoric archaeology. My work offers up the materials of the moors for contemplation. In doing so, I am considering themes of deep time, preservation, extraction and transience.
