Par Avion: Curved letter opener is a handy little tool for slitting opening envelopes. Until you have one, you just don’t realise how useful it is and how lovely it is to hold. However, much more than just a tool, it is like a little sculpture.
Simon Cass of the Par Avion partnership, has hand carved each letter opener from bog oak, which is thousands of years old. He has echoed the forms of stone-age hand tools, from the era when the original trees were growing.
In peat bogs, fallen trees can exist for thousands of years. The intact trees absorbed the peat and other sediment from the outside in, turning them a black to greyish-brown colour. As the bogs dried out, the fallen tree trunks gradually came closer to the surface. There was a time when farmers in the peat-rich fen lands were discarding lumps of sodden oak without realising its age or interest. It can date from the stone age, some 5,000 years ago.
Bog oak is now quite rare. Par Avion’s bog oak supply comes from the Cambridgeshire Fens, less than 75 miles from their base in Norwich. Its carbon dating makes it approximately 5000 years old. To put that into perspective, these mighty oaks were standing during the stone age!
