Tim Simmons

Tim Simmons is a lens based artist. His practice involves contemplation of our relationship with the world around us, and how it affects us both mentally and physically.

He examines the small, often overlooked details which make up the whole – the landscape within landscape. The antithesis of the big vista, his work is produced on a human scale designed to draw the viewer directly into the image, affording a different, more instinctual experience of the work. The unconscious links made between individuals and the natural environment can lead to an increased sense of belonging, ownership and responsibility for our natural heritage. Simmons’ intention is to provide a stimulus to such inner dialogue, to exploring our inherent connection to the land and how we can re-engage with it, amid wider issues of human isolation and environmental apathy.

Simmons’ has an underlying need to make sense of the world and my experience of it. Using photography and film, he explores themes of time, motion and place, to find meaning by connecting our finite existence to this ever-changing landscape. Attempting to make the unseen visible, he encourages the viewer to pause and explore on their relationship to the landscape, to consider the constancy of the land and the idea that landscape acts as a link between our past and the present. Simmons’ work creates a space for contemplation; a moment of visual clarity, inviting the audience to participate and reflect on their place in the world.

For the environmental campaigner, this offers a subtlety of place which heightens the minutiae we need to learn to care for. His work gives us the tools and the argument, plus the intangible qualities which make us want to care.

Tim Simmons began developing his artistic practice in the late 1990s alongside his career as a commercial photographer. He gave up commercial photography in 2005 to concentrate on his art practice and in 2013 enrolled for an MA in Fine Art at Norwich University of the Arts, graduating with Distinction in 2015. He was selected for Bloomberg New Contemporaries in 2015, exhibiting at Nottingham Contemporary and the ICA, London. Since then his work has been shown at Aspex Gallery, Portsmouth; Oriel Mostyn; Fermynwoods; Artsway, Hampshire; GroundWork, King’s Lynn; and Format Quad, Derby. His work has been shown internationally in the USA, Lithuania, Israel and South Korea. In 2016 he was Associate Artist at Fermynwoods Contemporary Art & Art Work Placement, connecting artists and businesses. Tim lives and works in Norfolk.
