Plain Sycamore Buoy Pendant

Sustainably harvested wood

Description

Jane Sedgwick’s Plain Sycamore Buoy Pendant with blue base is a playful adornment. It’s made of hand-turned and hand painted sycamore, threaded on organic cotton, hand dyed with natural pigment.

Jane Sedgwick is an independent artist and jeweller living near the North Norfolk coast. She is one of our GroundJewels selected artists.

Sustainable Materials

Jane harvests the sycamore sustainably from her woodland, she also finds and repurposes materials. Her work is to reveal and celebrate their aesthetic and tactile qualities. It’s part of the story how each piece ages and wears with time. Jane collected and treated the wood for the Plain Sycamore Pendant with blue base. She also mixes the dyes herself with organic ingredients. Her ultimate aim is to make jewellery that will be treasured by the wearer for many years to come.

Research

She researches the geography, history, and natural materials relating to specific locations to form the narrative of her jewellery. Jane also draws inspiration from folk art, toys, customs and costume.  The geometric forms, repetition and colour are particularly evocative of the qualities of modernist artworks.

Jane studied at Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art Dundee and then gained her masters at the Royal College of Art. In 2020 the Craft Council selected her to participate in their Hothouse programme.
