Blue and Yellow Perforated Sycamore Bangle

Sustainable Wood

Description

Jane Sedgwick’s Blue and Yellow Perforated Sycamore Bangle is a bright, fun, geometric piece that is light to wear. The bangle is made of sycamore that Jane sources herself and then hand turns and paints.

Jane Sedgwick is an independent artist and jeweller who lives near the North Norfolk coast. She is one of our GroundJewels selected artists.

Sustainable Materials

Jane harvests the sycamore sustainably from her woodland, she also finds and repurposes many materials. Her work is to reveal and celebrate their aesthetic and tactile qualities. It’s part of the story how each piece ages and wears with time. Jane collected and treated the wood for the Blue and Yellow Perforated Sycamore Bangle. She also mixes the dyes herself with organic ingredients. Jane’s ultimate aim is to make jewellery that the wearer will treasure for many years to come.

Research

Research into the geography, history, and natural materials relating to specific locations form the narrative of her jewellery. Jane also draws inspiration from folk art, toys, customs and costume.  The geometric forms, repetition and colour are particularly evocative of the qualities of modernist artworks.

Background

Jane studied at Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art Dundee and then gained her masters at the Royal College of Art. In 2020 the Craft Council selected her to participate in their Hothouse programme.
